Hiring the right people and building effective teams is one of the biggest challenges organisations can face. Skills and experience are important, but understanding how someone naturally behaves at work can make the real difference between a good hire and a great one. That’s where psychometric testing comes in and it’s a tool that we’re proud to offer as part of our HR services here at Rise HR.
Whether you’re recruiting, developing your team, or looking to improve communication across your organisation, psychometric testing can provide valuable insights to help you make more informed decisions.
What is Psychometric Testing?
Psychometric testing is a way of measuring an individual’s behavioural style, personality traits, and sometimes cognitive abilities. It helps employers better understand how people are likely to behave in the workplace.
At Rise HR, we use the Thomas International Personal Profile Analysis (PPA), which focuses on how people naturally behave at work. This includes how individuals:
- Communicate with others
- Make decisions
- Respond to challenges
- Work within a team
- Adapt to change
This insight allows organisations to move beyond CVs and interviews, giving a deeper understanding of how someone will perform in a role.
Why businesses are using psychometric testing more than ever
Organisations are increasingly turning to psychometric testing because it helps them make smarter people decisions. Understanding your employees’ motivations, behaviours, and working styles can lead to stronger performance and improved retention.
Psychometric testing can help organisations:
- Understand how individuals are likely to behave in a role
- Improve recruitment and hiring accuracy
- Support employee development and progression
- Enhance communication and management styles
- Reduce employee turnover by improving job fit
By aligning people to roles based on behavioural requirements, organisations can build more effective and productive teams.
A powerful tool for recruitment and hiring
Recruitment decisions can be challenging, particularly when candidates appear equally qualified on paper. Psychometric testing adds another layer of insight to help you choose the right person.
When used as part of your recruitment process, psychometric testing can:
- Identify candidates whose natural behaviours match the role
- Reduce unconscious bias in hiring decisions
- Help structure more effective interviews
- Predict workplace performance and cultural fit
It’s important to note that psychometric testing should never be used in isolation. At Rise HR, we use it alongside interviews, experience, and references to support well-rounded and informed hiring decisions.
Building stronger, more effective teams
Psychometric testing isn’t just useful for recruitment – it’s also a powerful tool for team development.
Understanding how different personalities work together can significantly improve collaboration and reduce workplace friction. The Thomas PPA helps organisations:
- Highlight different working styles within a team
- Improve communication and understanding
- Identify strengths and potential challenges
- Help managers balance teams more effectively
This can be particularly valuable during periods of growth, restructuring, or when introducing new team members.
Understanding the DISC Behavioural Model
The Thomas PPA is based on four key behavioural factors, commonly known as the DISC model:
Dominance (D) How someone deals with problems and challenges
Influence (I) How they communicate and influence others
Steadiness (S) Their pace, patience, and consistency
Compliance (C) Their attention to rules, detail, and structure
These factors combine to create a workplace behavioural profile. While this information should always be considered alongside other factors, our experience shows that the insights are often highly accurate and extremely useful for both managers and employees.
Quick, simple and easy to implement
One of the advantages of psychometric testing is how quick and easy it is to introduce.
If you’re interested in using psychometric testing:
- Speak with your HR Consultant
- An email invitation is sent directly to the individual(s)
- The assessment takes approximately 10 minutes to complete
This makes it a practical and accessible tool for organisations of all sizes.
Expert support and interpretation
Once the assessment is completed, the results are available immediately to Rise HR.
Your HR Consultant will then:
- Review the results in detail
- Schedule time with the manager
- Schedule time with the individual
These meetings are held separately to allow for meaningful discussions. Our team is trained to interpret the results and provide practical recommendations to help you get the most value from the insights.
